Yogurt Cake (Gâteau au Yaourt)¶
This classic French cake, traditionally measured using an empty yogurt jar (pot), is shown here in two versions from Gâteau: The Surprising Simplicity of French Cakes.
🍰 Version 1 (Classic Plain)¶

Ingredients (Version 1)¶
1 jar (125 g) whole plain yogurt
3 large eggs
2 jars (200 g) granulated sugar
3 jars (180 g) all-purpose or cake flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 jar (0.5 cup) canola oil

- 1 8.5 x 4.5 inch loaf pan
- 1 mixing bowl
Instructions (Version 1)¶
Step 1¶
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter and flour an 8.5 x 4.5 inch loaf pan.
Step 2¶
Empty the 1 jar of whole plain yogurt from its little jar into a mixing bowl. Add the eggs and whisk to combine. Using the empty yogurt jar as a measuring cup, add 2 jars of granulated sugar. Whisk well. Whisk in 3 jars of all-purpose or cake flour and the baking powder, then whisk in 1 jar of canola oil until homogeneous.
Step 3¶
Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
🍋 Version 2 (Vanilla & Lemon)¶

Ingredients (Version 2)¶
1 jar (125 g) whole plain yogurt
3 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 lemon, zested
2 jars (200 g) granulated sugar
3 jars (180 g) all-purpose or cake flour
2 tsp baking powder
0.25 tsp salt
1 jar (0.5 cup) canola oil

- 1 mixing bowl

Step 1¶
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter and flour an 8.5 x 4.5 inch loaf pan.
Step 2¶
Whisk the 1 jar of whole plain yogurt and eggs together in a mixing bowl. Whisk in the vanilla and lemon zest. Add the 2 jars of granulated sugar and whisk to thoroughly combine. Add the 3 jars of all-purpose or cake flour, baking powder, and salt and whisk just to combine. Add the 1 jar of canola oil and whisk until homogeneous.
Step 3¶
Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
💡 Notes¶
This cake can also be made in an 8-inch springform or a 9-inch round cake pan: * A 9-inch cake will take around 30 to 35 minutes to bake. * An 8-inch round cake will take closer to 40 minutes. * A medium loaf pan takes between 35 and 45 minutes.
